A final update before we return home!

July 12, 2007

Hello again,

Wow! It’s hard to believe that it is already Thursday, and as I write this, we are preparing to go to the Santa Ana church for our final day of work – tomorrow is our day off.

Over the course of the past three days, the Lord has accomplished a great deal through our hands. There has been work done by a couple team members at the school located at the Bugambilias church. At the Santa Ana church we have completed painting jobs, leveled a garden and laid sod. Today we will complete putting a fence around the garden. Additionally we have a team now building a tool shed and making cement pillars for the classroom section of the Santa Ana church. A lot has been accomplished on the work site and that is due in large part to the prayers of the faithful who have sent us.

On the health front, the Great Physician has restored the health of those who had been dealing with some issues – at the moment all team members are healthy and well – anxious to make a strong push on our last work day.

Tomorrow, our day off, will bring something new – a visit to a large waterfall north of the city of Guadalajara. We will also take a tour of downtown Guadalajara and spend some time shopping.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Pray for the team as we finish off our work portion of the trip – pray that we remain healthy, all the while working with fervor to finish the tasks.
  2. Pray for the safety of the team as we tour Guadalajara and go shopping tomorrow.
  3. Pray for our travels on Saturday.

To this point, the trip has been a tremendous success. We look forward to completing the race set out before us over the next two days, and then returning to you, our loved ones. We will see you all soon.

Yours In HIM,

John

An update from Mexico!

July 10, 2007 *note - there are photos at the end of this article. Scroll down and click the hyperlink to view each one.

Hello all!

Again, let me first thank all of you for the prayers that have been lifted up on our behalf – we can certainly sense the power of God’s people’s prayers.

On the Lord’s Day, we began with a worship service in the Santa Ana community of Guadalajara – this was in the sanctuary which our team worked on 3 years ago and it is where we are working this year. The pastor there is Gonzalo, whom those of you who have been to Guadalajara before know well. We were warmly greeted by the congregation and some were able to reunite with families that hosted them 3 years ago. From there it was off to the Trotter’s for a wonderful lunch and a time for fun. We also made our annual hike to the overlook (see the team picture) to see the immense layout of the city of Guadalajara – it brought to memory the words of the Lord to the prophet Jonah, “Shall I not have compassion on that great city?” In this, we are reminded of why we have been sent.

Monday finally came and we began on the worksite at the Santa Ana church. Some were painting; some digging holes (3’ wide X 3’ long X 4’ deep) through the floor of classrooms to build new ones. Others leveled ground and planted sod; while still more scraped plaster off of walls in what will become a tool shed. It was a long and hot day as we worked on these jobs and handled 2 deliveries of 500 cement blocks each (see the picture of us passing blocks) and 2 deliveries of stone, 1 of sand and 1 of sod. At the end of the day all were tired and dirty (yes, even me). Then real challenge began as we returned to our dorms to shower before going out to dinner. Well, half of us got showers – then we ran out of water. Improvise, adapt, overcome – therefore half took sponge baths just in time to go out for an authentic Mexican dinner, complete with a Mariachi band.

Prayer Updates:

  1. Please continue to pray for our team as far as tiredness goes – especially as we have begun the difficult tasks of the worksite. Additionally, a couple of team members have had trouble adapting to the sleeping conditions and have been struggling to get the necessary sleep.
  2. Continue to pray for health – the 2 that were having concerns brought out in our previous update are doing well. We do, however, have one team member who had a difficult time at the worksite yesterday – getting a bit dehydrated. They are doing better today but pray that they continue to recover and that the rest of us remain healthy.
  3. We had a great time at the Trotter’s on Sunday and all remained well.
  4. I truly believe that God was glorified through our interactions at church – we met new people and saw relationships from the past renewed.
  5. Please continue to pray for safety on the worksite – as we get more and more tired, there is greater risk for injury and dehydration.

Additional Prayer Request:

  1. Again, as the team gets more tired physically, we grow emotionally drained as well. Therefore we ask that you pray for us as we relate to one another – that we may continue to show the love of Jesus to one another.

Thanks again for everything – In HIS Name,

John
